Saturday Night Trick-or-Treaters?
Does this only happen in the south?  Changing the date of Halloween from Sunday to Saturday in some areas so the little goblin-getters won't be out on SUNDAY, Halloween being a pagan holiday and all that.

Where do people get this anyway?  Even as little of history as I know, I remember learning that Halloween comes from All Hallows Eve, a Christian holiday for all the saints who had no holiday of their own.  The fact that little kids like to dress up like "witches" is what throws some people over the edge I guess.

Then there's those who say the date needs to be shifted because we wouldn't want the little trick-or-treaters to get too wild on a school night.  But it's never a problem when Halloween falls on a Tuesday or Thursday so that doesn't really ring true with me.

So now I guess I have to prepare for the little beggars two nights in a row because of course some of them are going to look at Saturday as a "bonus" day.  Perhaps this makes me sound grinch-like but one night of Halloween is really all I want.

Re: Saturday Night Trick-or-Treaters?

At last I am presented with an opportunity to spew forth information not already possesed by the all knowing, ever wise Frolix.  You asked why they change haloween from Sunday to Saturday and you espouse several theories to explain this strange behavior.  Well here is the correct, though hidden, reason.

When the little goblins ring doorbells and the doors swing open, the precious little ones not only have their hand out to accept the offerings of the homeowners but also they have a freiking bag for folks to drop the goodies in.  Is that not a bit like when you attend church?  They set aside a special part of the ceremony/program.  They prepare you to give to them by having a prayer to “bless” the offering.  This prayer is usually designed not for God to hear but for the givers to hear and be made to feel guilty if they don't give til it hurts.  Then they send big menacing looking ushurs one one each end of your pew (so you can't escape) and they stick a container under your nose and watch scornfully to see how much you give.  It's a time for Brother against Brother and Father against Son, if your Brother or Father happens to be an usher.  When you arrive home your wife asks “Why did you give the tithes and the car payment to the church? and you answer “Did you hear the funeral music they were playing while they passed the offering plate around?  Did you hear the Prayer?  The Preacher said 'Lord we know your commandments and we know all we have you gave to us and we know our duty to bring all the tithes and offerings into the church so it can be used to build your kingdom but if we don't we know the judgement is coming...' and on and on.  I gave till the usher smiled so I could live to see another day.”

Now Frolix you wouldn't want the cute little kids to go into competition against such a powerful entity as that, would you?  I'm so glad they changed it to Saturday.  I'd hate to see little five year old run over by a church bus.
